If I recall correctly, George wasn't shooting it for fun but because it had gone bananas - although by the time he got there, it had calmed down but he shot it anyway, because he felt he had to in order to save face in front of the locals. Apparently, because he had a small gun and was a crap shot, it took hours and hours for it to die. Not a great day for the British empire.
