Ha Ha! Morbid Mark in a suit and tie dancing to disco? Brilliant. Shame you didn't get it on film, I'd love to have seen that.

Yeah, I knew Dom was into DJing a while back but didn't know what. Gabba / hardcore rave eh? Hmm. Wonder what his kids think ..

I bumped into Mark a few years back in Scunny at The Hanger - DJ was playing some disco stuff and he was dancing away to it - dressed all in black but with shirt and tie on! He told me Terminus were a cult band. I have a couple of there 7's on vinyl still and gonna check them out on e-bay. Also bumped in Dom Roberts not too long ago.... Dom into his gabba/hardcore rave.....?????

Glad to be of service Waka. Whatever happened to 'Mad' Maart Kijrevjir? I liked him a lot. And Adam and Morbid too, obviously.

I met Adam a few years back at some gig somewhere in Manchester I think. Can't remember too much about it. Leathered. He looked well though.

And apparently Terminus are a cult band now.

Still keep in touch with Pete Lazerbeam, sporadically. I keep trying to get him over to Manchester but he won't have it.

This piece has put a big smile on my face. The Furness Arms and Jensens just reminds me of Snakebites, squidgy black and acid tabs. Also argueing with Hippy Adam, Morbid Mark and Dutch Maart..cos I had a job and some money and they didn't. I was a capitalist, but they freely took drinks from me. Unfortunatley the Baths Hall now been knocked down...and as for the Cramps I'm still taking there records out with me and playing them.....fantastic stuff......

Ah, I was away at the time but it sounds like the kind of thing I'd have come back down for - but I have no recollection of it at all.

The Chumbas were terrific live at that time. I think your gig was the second time they'd played at the Baths - they did a CND benefit the previous year too. Not many people had seen them before so they had a bit of an impact, to say the least.

Were they doing the Live Aid stuff then or was it all washing lines and sweeping up in the audience?

I think the fact that bands like the Chumbas would play in places like Scunthorpe was part of the attraction of the scene. Not too many other decent bands did. Maybe because nobody asked them.

A load of us went over to Doncaster Co-op Hall a couple of years before for what turned out to be the Mob's last gig - then again, the Pistols, X-Ray Spex and the Fall all played Doncaster too.

Proper rock'n'roll town, Doncaster.

In an old diary I've just found the ticket for that Chumba gig - 1st March 1985, Scunthorpe Baths Hall, Doncaster Road. £1.50 (I'll scan it in for you if you want). To be honest my main memory is of being in a van all the way to Scunthorpe and back again from Luton in one night, turning up in a car park in what to us seemed the middle of nowhere. The gig was busy, and I remember at the time being totally in awe of Chumba - obviously hanging around in that punk scene we were otherwise starved of melody let alone harmony! One of the interesting things about that scene and time was this sense of an alternative anarcho circuit linking together improbable places - Scunthorpe Baths, the Ambulance Station in the Old Kent Road (London) and Luton.

Brilliant. What did you think of the Baths? And how was the gig?

I have to admit I've no idea if I was at that gig or not. I certainly saw the Chumbas at the Baths a couple of times, and I'm sure I saw Karma Sutra at least once in Scunthorpe, but I don't remember it being at the Baths ..

Acid house has a lot to answer for.

I'm going to get a piece together about the Baths at some point. It was a pretty cool place, I think, especially in a town with as many problems as Scunthorpe had at the time.

It's still there, but only just.

There wasn't any real investment throughout the Eighties and the Nineties, it wasn't manintained properly and it ended up being a bit shabby and crappy - or even shabbier and crappier.

When the Tories managed to weasel their way into power on the council (for the first time in 30 years) it was easy for them to close it down.

It looks like there might be a happy ending to the story though.

Anyway, another time. Thanks very much for the comment but I'd be really interested to hear what you thought about the Baths if you can spare the time ..

I think I might have been to Scunthorpe baths, it was around 84/85 and I was living in Luton, I came up with the local anarcho-punk band Karma Sutra (I was operating their projector)who were supporting Chumbawamba at a CND gig.
